The Rise of Jailos Goat: From Mbare Rugby Pitches to Global Recognition

Valentine Jailos, a name now synonymous with a burgeoning clothing brand making waves across Zimbabwe and beyond, embodies a story of resilience, passion, and the transformative power of sport. Born and raised in Mbare National, one of Zimbabwe’s oldest high-density suburbs, Valentine’s journey is a testament to overcoming adversity and leveraging one’s roots for global success.

Growing up in a family of two, Valentine was the last born, raised by a single mother. His early life in Mbare was deeply intertwined with sports, particularly rugby. He began playing the sport at the tender age of eight, joining the Mbare Rugby Academy. Valentine credits the academy with shaping his formative years, stating,

“I grew up playing for Mbare Rugby Academy since 8 yrs and that academy helped me a lot in my life, I was taught a lot in that academy and it controlled me a lot because I was always busy either I’m at school or I’m training that’s how I grew up and it contributed for me to be away from so many things in the ghetto like drugs and alcohol abuse.”

It was during his high school years, while playing for the first team at a boys’ school, that Valentine’s exceptional rugby talent earned him the moniker “Jailos Goat.” He recalls

“Jailos Goat, it came up when I was at high school playing rugby for 1st team at a boys’ school, and my performance was outstanding, and people started calling me Goat.” This nickname, signifying the “Greatest Of All Time,” would later become the foundation of his entrepreneurial venture.

Rugby continued to be a cornerstone of Valentine’s life, propelling him to national recognition. His name became a prominent fixture in Zimbabwean rugby circles, eventually leading him to become a professional rugby player and a member of the Zimbabwe national team, specifically the renowned Zimbabwe Sevens side. He firmly believes that without rugby, he would not have achieved the success he enjoys today, emphasising,

“Rugby helped me a lot, that’s why I’m here, I’m sure if I didn’t play rugby, I wouldn’t be here on top. My name was already in the top chats in Zimbabwe rugby, so it became easy to introduce my brand.”

The inspiration for the Jailos Goat clothing brand emerged from an unexpected encounter. Valentine recounted a pivotal moment when he approached a musician friend, seeking a contract to produce t-shirts for the artist’s already popular label.

“So I used to stay with one of my brothers from another mother who’s one of the best musicians in the country. So I asked him to give me a contract to make t-shirts for his label, which was already making waves in the country, but he rejected that when I was inspired to create my own brand since people already knew about who I was,” he explains.

This moment of rejection, though initially disheartening, ignited a spark within Valentine, becoming the catalyst for Jailos Goat’s birth.

Initially, the brand found its strongest acceptance within Valentine’s rugby community—his teammates and fans. This early association led many to believe that Jailos Goat exclusively focused on sportswear. However, Valentine clarifies,

“Jailos Goat focus on everything that people wear: sportswear, streetwear, corporate wear and formal wear, but the reason why people think it focuses on sportswear only is that when I started the brand…it was accepted by my rugby mates and fans.”

This comprehensive approach reflects a desire to cater to various aspects of people’s lives, extending beyond the athletic field. Further solidifying its connection to the sporting world, Jailos Goat proudly designed the jersey for the Zimbabwe Bus Club, a testament to its growing influence and quality within the athletic community.

Today, Jailos Goat has transcended its humble beginnings, achieving global recognition. Valentine proudly states,

“The brand has reached a level that everyone now knows it worldwide. So many influential people have worn it, and a great milestone we have achieved is to be accepted to register our brand in America, which is very rare in those countries to register an African clothing brand.”

This achievement is particularly noteworthy, signifying the brand’s quality and international appeal.

Valentine’s journey is a powerful narrative of self-belief and the profound impact of positive influences. He shares a message of hope and perseverance:

“What I can say is that with God everything is possible. We just have to believe in ourselves and focus on things that matter.” He also champions the role of sports, especially for young boys in challenging environments like the ghetto. “Sports are very good things to do, especially if you’re a boy growing up in the ghetto, because yes you might not get to a level to be professional, but you’ll grow up with a lot of wisdom and knowledge. Even your communication skills will be on top because of meeting different people, and that will give you exposure,” he advises.

Jailos Goat is more than just a clothing brand; it is a symbol of aspiration, a product of Mbare’s vibrant spirit, and a testament to Valentine Jailos’s unwavering dedication to his craft and his community. It stands as a beacon of what can be achieved when talent, hard work, and a strong foundation converge to propel one forward
