The Impact of Social Media Influencers on Zimbabwean Youth Culture: A Focus on Chitungwiza

Social media is increasingly becoming a powerful tool for learning, creativity and self-expression among young people in Chitungwiza. Through platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, influencers are helping shape trends, inspire entrepreneurship and encourage young people to pursue their dreams.

Many youths in the community say social media influencers have become role models who motivate them to develop their talents, build businesses and express themselves confidently.

For 28-year-old Osinai, following local influencers has helped him think differently about his future.

“I have learned that you can use social media to market your skills and reach many people. Influencers have shown young people that there are opportunities beyond traditional jobs, and I opened my music studio,” he said.

A media and communications lecturer noted that influencers have become important voices in the digital age, particularly among young audiences.

“Social media influencers can shape opinions, lifestyles and aspirations. When they promote positive values such as entrepreneurship, education and community development, they can make a meaningful contribution to society,” Mr Muchemedzi, the lecturer, explained.

Ashley Ncube believes social media can be used to inspire positive change.

“We have a responsibility to share content that motivates young people. I try to promote hard work, creativity and confidence through my platforms,” she said.

Parents have also observed positive changes among some young people who use social media responsibly. Chitungwiza resident Mrs Chakanetsa said her daughter has developed new interests through the content she follows online.

“She has learned skills such as photography, fashion design and content creation. Social media has opened doors for learning and self-development,” she said.

Community members say influencers are helping to promote local talent, businesses and cultural identity. Through their content, many young people are showcasing Zimbabwean fashion, music, art and entrepreneurship to wider audiences.

Youth groups in Chitungwiza are also using social media platforms to share information, organise community activities and encourage civic participation. This has helped strengthen connections among young people and create opportunities for collaboration.

While challenges remain in ensuring responsible use of social media, many stakeholders agree that digital platforms offer significant opportunities for growth and innovation.

As technology continues to evolve, social media influencers are playing an increasingly important role in shaping youth culture in Chitungwiza. Through creativity, education and positive engagement, they are helping inspire a generation of young people to dream bigger, develop their talents and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
